SURVEY: LUS and LCG Public Works have collaborated to get a clearer understanding of how to better assist the Lafayette community's outdoor watering needs. They are requesting Lafayette residents take a 5-minute survey that will ask questions about their outdoor watering activities. The survey will allow LUS and Public Works to determine the interest level of participants in using a rain barrel as a method for their outdoor watering.  (Click here for Survey)

Why is it important to have a land use plan?

Sporadic, hap-hazard land use developments often create conflicts among residents, businesses and land owners. One of the tools used to mitigate these land use conflicts through zoning districts. A land use plan should help facilitate the highest and best compatible uses with existing and proposed new land use development. What is built, when it is built and how it is built directs public and private investment toward a community goal or objective without the negative impacts of conflicts and helps maintain or enhance property value.

How does a land use plan affect me?

Where an individual might build a residence, usiness or industrial structure can be restricted by the land use plan. Compatibility, continuity, and conformity to the adopted land use plan impacts what an individual or business may build.

The Comprehensive Master Plan

LAND USE PLAN

The Land Use Element identifies recommendations for managed growth in the city and parish using both incentives and regulations. This element upholds an infrastructure system in the parish, so the burden of new development will not be placed on current citizens. Accordingly, the element suggests that development be encouraged in existing urban areas and around the transportation system. The Land Use Element recommends this be done through performance-based criterion. The performance measures should be consistent with the expansion of the government's infrastructure (Capital Improvement Program) in order to allow for increased efficiency. Growth that is consistent with this plan should involve incentives through tax programs and districts such as Tax Increment Financing (TIF), Community Facilities Improvement Districts, and Redevelopment Districts.
