The responsibility for planning in the Lafayette area is mandatory by State Law. Sections 101 through 119 of the State of Louisiana Enabling Legislation for Planning and Zoning (1950 R.S. Title 33. Part IV), as amended, establishes the basic framework for public planning by local governmental units in Louisiana. In accordance with these statutes, the Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Charter has appointed a five-member Planning Commission. These statutes provide that "a municipal planning commission shall make and adopt a master plan for the physical development of the municipality."
Being that the Lafayette Consolidated Government has a Parish President/City-Parish Council form of government, the Parish President appoints and the City-Parish Council approves the five-member Planning and Zoning Commission. This Planning and Zoning Commission advises the City-Parish Council on policy, planning, zoning and development. This commission is responsible for preparing and recommending the Comprehensive Plan to the City-Parish Council.
The Lafayette Consolidated Government, in its capacity as a federally recognized Metropolitan Planning Organization, is responsible for all transportation issues that affect this geographical boundary. Under this hat, the Lafayette City-Parish Council is responsible for three MPO Advisory Committees: Citizen Advisory Committee, Transportation Technical Committee and the Transportation Policy Committee.
