Planning Milestones

Planning in Lafayette has a rich, varied tradition. Planners acting in consort with the MPO, the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Adjustments and elected officials greatly have contributed to the many community improvements that make the city and Parish a better place to live. The following milestones are events and achievements that illustrate both the duration and extent of the planning's impact. The importance of the first and the last entries cannot be overemphasized.

...On Sept. 23, 1954, the first planning commission was established by ordinance by the Lafayette Parish Police Jury.

...In 1955, the City Planning Commission and the Parish Planning Commission contract with Charles Colbert and Associates, jointly, for the first Comprehensive Plan.

...On March 12, 1956,the first Major Thoroughfare Plan was adopted (revised).

...In 1959, the first full-time city planner was hired by City Planning Commission (Glenn C. Duhon, Director).

...On Oct. 19, 1960, the City Planning Commission adopts the first Land Use Plan.

...In 1971, the first zoning ordinance was amended/adopted.

...In 1978, the Major Thoroughfare Plan was revised.

...On May 14, 1979, City Subdivision Regulations were adopted.

...In 1980, a Revised Land Use Plan report was adopted.

...In 1981, the subdivision regulations were amended.

...In 1997, the first update to the Major Thoroughfare Plan update was initiated and completed.
